Time is directly basic and mysterious. From the 2000-year-old Antikythera Mechanism to fashionable cesium-fountain clocks, people have lengthy sought to grasp temporal patterns in nature, and construct mechanisms to measure, mirror and predict these patterns. We’re at a novel second, one by which we have developed the power to understand relativistic results on time on the smallest scales, whereas struggling to assume and plan throughout generations.
On this dialogue course, college students will mirror on the deep mysteries of time. How can we find our place within the huge historical past and expanse of the Universe? Why do the planets, moon, and stars transfer the way in which they do? What does the long run maintain? Does time even exist? The course will draw from the wealthy supplies out there on the HSNY’s Jost Bürgi Analysis Library, and from the teacher’s graduate course at NYU, “Time”.
